History

The town was founded around 1200 (chronicles say so) and got its cityhood in 1300. When the city was founded it had fought a lot of enemies through the centuries: first the Slavic tribals who lived there until the city was founded, then the Swedes in the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). From this final encounter with the Swedes there is a legend that said, when the Swedes reached the river Lober the tower warden's daughter got the enemies in her view and blew the trumpet, so the citizens of the town could get in safety and the enemies were defeated by a large number. So every year there is a historical fair (medieval style) where regional small enterprises can represent themselves and the shopping centers are open on Sundays. The citizens can walk along the fair and celebrate the victory over the Swedes. In World War II (1939 - 1945), only building has burned, the station.

In a survey of 1996 Delitzsch had more than 27,000 inhabitants. But many young people leave the region because of the high unemployment rate in the "Neue Bundesländer" (New Federal States). They go to the western parts of Germany to seek for employment and better education.

Industry

In the time of the German Democratic Republic, many regions were industrialized for coal mining to get electricity, so too in Delitzsch. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the new government of Saxony decided to restructure the region around Delitzsch into a recreational center, called "Tagebaurestloch Goitzsche" (mining rest hole Goitzsch - origin for Goitzsche unknown) In the 1990s Delitzsch had a sugar factory of the company "Südzucker", Europe's largest sugar producer. It had also a railway plant from the "Deutsche Bahn" which will be closed in 2006 after heavy debates with the CEO of the company, Hartmut Mehdorn. The biggest employer in town is a chocolate factory of the company "Vanetten" which produces "chocolate santa clauses", "yelly bananas" and "chocolate easter rabbits" and other sweets. Most of the citizens are commuters who works in Leipzig. The private sector is the largest employer of the city (insurances, money banks, ...) Delitzsch has an hospital which is the largest in the county.

Interesting facts

  • Delitzsch comes from the slavic name "Delc" which means "town on a hill"
  • City partnership (twinned) with:

Sights

Delitzsch has a lot of sights to offer. From a castle, to an medieval inner city, to an historic town wall which was rebuilt in 1990's. In the castle there is also the marriage council.

Sports

After the GDR, Delitzsch's sport gets a raffle because sport was no longer financed by the government, so many sport clubs must closed. But there are five mayor sport clubs in Delitzsch:

Education

In fact that Delitzsch lost many citizens to West Germany, many schools were torn off because there were no enough students to teach. In 2003 the Mittelschule Delitzsch Nord merges with the Mittelschule Delitzsch West. The second merges was in 2003 too, when the Oscar-Reime-Gymnasium (grammar school) merges with the Ehrenberg-Gymnasium. Delitzsch has three middle schools: Mittelschule Delitzsch Nord and Arthur Becker Mittelschule. The Comenius-Mittelschule closes in 2006. It has one grammar school: Ehrenberg Gymnasium There are also elementary schools: Rosenweg and others. The Grundschule Delitzsch West (elementary school) was closed in 1999.

But Delitzsch has the most modern vocational grammar school in Saxony, the "Berufsschulzentrum Hermann-Schulze-Delitzsch". The school is in cooperation with Apple Germany, a computer manufacturer. The school has a good sporting complex for track and field, basketball and other sports.
