Delhi Charter Township, Michigan

Delhi Charter Township is a charter township in Ingham County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 22,569.

Communities

  • Holt is an unincorporated community in the township that is also a census-designated place for statistical purposes. Holt is just south of Interstate 96 and is about 6 miles northwest of Mason.
  • The city of Lansing is adjacent to the north and has incorporated land that was formerly within the township. Much of the township is considered to be part of the Greater Lansing urban area.
  • The city of Mason is nearby to the southeast and the village of Dimondale is to the west.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 75.0 km² (29.0 mi²). 74.6 km² (28.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.48% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,569 people, 8,563 households, and 6,268 families residing in the township. The population density is 302.5/km² (783.2/mi²). There are 8,988 housing units at an average density of 120.5/km² (311.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 92.95% White, 2.36% African American, 0.49% Native American, 1.15% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. 3.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Households

There are 8,563 households out of which 40.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% are non-families. 22.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.61 and the average family size is 3.06.

Ages

In the township the population is spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.5 males.

Income

The median income for a household in the township is $50,922, and the median income for a family is $61,837. Males have a median income of $45,774 versus $31,192 for females. The per capita income for the township is $23,485. 5.2% of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.8% of those under the age of 18 and 5.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
