Delaware Township is a township located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 4,478. The historic community of Sergeantsville is located in Delaware Township.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 95.9 km² (37.0 mi²). 95.2 km² (36.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.
Delaware Township borders Kingwood Township, Franklin Township, Raritan Township, East Amwell Township, West Amwell Township, the City of Lambertville, and Stockton Borough.
Delaware Township also borders the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Delaware Township is connected to Solebury Township, Pennsylvania by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission Lumberville-Raven Rock pedestrian suspension bridge over the Delaware River.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 4,478 people, 1,643 households, and 1,302 families residing in the township. The population density is 47.1/km² (121.9/mi²). There are 1,701 housing units at an average density of 17.9/km² (46.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.70% White, 0.40% African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.03% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.56% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,643 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.3% are married couples living together, 4.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.7% are non-families. 14.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the township the population is spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 32.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.3 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $80,756, and the median income for a family is $90,842. Males have a median income of $61,701 versus $48,780 for females. The per capita income for the township is $38,285. 3.4% of the population and 2.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 1.2% are under the age of 18 and 12.2% are 65 or older.
