Deerfield, New York

Deerfield is a town located in Oneida County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,906.

The Town of Deerfield is on the eastern border of the county and northeast of the City of Utica.

Geography

The east town line is the border of Herkimer County, New York. The New York State Thruway and the Erie Canal pass through the south part of the town. The Mohawk River forms the south border of the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town, which lies immediately north of the city of Utica, has a total area of 85.6 km² (33.1 mi²). 85.3 km² (32.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.39% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,906 people, 1,449 households, and 1,146 families residing in the town. The population density is 45.8/km² (118.6/mi²). There are 1,512 housing units at an average density of 17.7/km² (45.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.75% White, 0.59% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 0.31% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,449 households out of which 35.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.9% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.9% are non-families. 17.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 99.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $47,197, and the median income for a family is $53,631. Males have a median income of $37,540 versus $24,441 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,676. 3.8% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.5% of those under the age of 18 and 8.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
