De Peyster, New York

De Peyster is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 936. The name is that of one of the land owners of the region.

History

The town was established in 1825 from parts of the Towns of De Kalb and Oswegatchie. Newton Martin Curtis, born in the town was a postmaster, brigadier general, and customs inspector.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 116.8 km² (45.1 mi²). 111.5 km² (43.1 mi²) of it is land and 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.54% water.

The northeast town line is defined by the Oswegatchie River and the northwest town line is defined by Black Lake.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 936 people, 272 households, and 217 families residing in the town. The population density is 8.4/km² (21.7/mi²). There are 307 housing units at an average density of 2.8/km² (7.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.61% White, 1.07% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.21% from two or more races. 0.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 272 households out of which 42.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.9% are married couples living together, 7.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.9% are non-families. 16.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.44 and the average family size is 3.89.

In the town the population is spread out with 37.3% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 104.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $28,750, and the median income for a family is $31,500. Males have a median income of $25,000 versus $21,458 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,667. 27.2% of the population and 24.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 36.0% of those under the age of 18 and 11.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • De Peyster -- The hamlet of De Peyster is in the northern part of the town on Route 10.
  • Kokomo Corners -- A locations west of De Peyster village on Route 184.
