DeRuyter is a town located in Madison County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,532.
The Town of DeRuyter has a village in it called DeRuyter. The town is in the southwest corner of the county.
Geography
The west town line forms a border with Onondaga County, and Cortland County. The south town line is the border of Chenango County, New York.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 81.0 km² (31.3 mi²). 79.0 km² (30.5 mi²) of it is land and 2.0 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.49% water.
DeRuyter is in the southwest corner of the county.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,532 people, 592 households, and 412 families residing in the town. The population density is 19.4/km² (50.2/mi²). There are 867 housing units at an average density of 11.0/km² (28.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.06% White, 1.31% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 0.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 592 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.9% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 25.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.08.
