Dakota County is a county located in the state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 20,253. Its county seat is Dakota City6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 693 km² (267 mi²). 683 km² (264 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.35% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,253 people, 7,095 households, and 5,087 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km² (77/mi²). There are 7,528 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (28/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 78.84% White, 0.62% Black or African American, 1.86% Native American, 3.08% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 12.91% from other races, and 2.62% from two or more races. 22.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,095 households out of which 39.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.60% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.30% are non-families. 22.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.30.

In the county the population is spread out with 30.50% under the age of 18, 10.10% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 20.10% from 45 to 64, and 9.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 99.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,834, and the median income for a family is $43,702. Males have a median income of $28,341 versus $22,035 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,125. 11.40% of the population and 9.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.60% of those under the age of 18 and 8.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
