Crossville is a town located in DeKalb County, Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 1,431.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²). 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,431 people, 539 households, and 365 families residing in the town. The population density is 91.8/km² (237.8/mi²). There are 593 housing units at an average density of 38.0/km² (98.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.69% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 2.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 539 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% are non-families. 30.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 81.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $31,394, and the median income for a family is $44,667. Males have a median income of $27,708 versus $20,461 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,326. 15.2% of the population and 11.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.5% of those under the age of 18 and 29.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
