Crest is an unincorporated community located in San Diego County, California. As of the 2000 census, the census-designated place had a total population of 2,716.

Geography

Crest is located at 32°48'21" North, 116°52'3" West (32.805918, -116.867405)Template:GR. It is located on a hill east of El Cajon

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 16.5 km² (6.4 mi²). 16.5 km² (6.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,716 people, 964 households, and 746 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 164.4/km² (425.4/mi²). There are 999 housing units at an average density of 60.5/km² (156.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 92.89% White, 0.33% African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.70% Asian, 0.26% Pacific Islander, 1.88% from other races, and 3.13% from two or more races. 7.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 964 households out of which 36.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.3% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% are non-families. 16.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 29.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 102.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $56,728, and the median income for a family is $60,852. Males have a median income of $50,293 versus $35,610 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $22,890. 9.1% of the population and 5.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Crest was twice devistated by wildfires: first by the Laguna Fire in 1970 then again by the Cedar Fire in 2003.
