Coxsackie is a town located in Greene County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 8,884.

The Town of Coxsackie has a village also called Coxsackie. The town is in the northeast part of the county.

History

The settlement of Coxsackie began in the 17th Century.

Geography

The eastern town line is defined by the Hudson River and is the border of Columbia County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 99.4 km² (38.4 mi²). 95.6 km² (36.9 mi²) of it is land and 3.8 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.86% water. The eastern border of the town is the Hudson River.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,884 people, 2,422 households, and 1,583 families residing in the town. The population density is 93.0/km² (240.8/mi²). There are 2,789 housing units at an average density of 29.2/km² (75.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 72.24% White, 20.33% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 5.85% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 11.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,422 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.9% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% are non-families. 28.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the town the population is spread out with 18.7% under the age of 18, 24.3% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 185.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 210.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,830, and the median income for a family is $46,189. Males have a median income of $37,823 versus $26,859 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,830. 12.9% of the population and 9.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.7% of those under the age of 18 and 16.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
