Covington, Georgia

Covington is a city located in Newton County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,547. Census Estimates of 2003 indicate a population of 13,152. The city is the county seat of Newton CountyTemplate:GR

In 1979, the TV show The Dukes of Hazzard was shot here for only 5 episodes. It was known as Hazzard County during the filming of this show.

From 1989 to 1994, the city served as the fictionalized version of Sparta, Mississippi in the television show In the Heat of the Night. The Covington Wal-Mart caught international attention when a local resident attempted to pay for $1,672 of merchandise with a million dollar bill. Covington was the site of a dogfight that was raided by police in January 2004, arresting at least 150 for animal cruelty and cocaine and marijuana possession.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.9 km² (13.9 mi²). 35.6 km² (13.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.72% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,547 people, 4,261 households, and 2,906 families residing in the city. The population density is 324.0/km² (839.2/mi²). There are 4,542 housing units at an average density of 127.4/km² (330.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 51.55% White, 45.54% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 2.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,261 households out of which 31.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% are married couples living together, 23.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% are non-families. 26.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.19.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 88.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,997, and the median income for a family is $36,408. Males have a median income of $29,622 versus $23,339 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,554. 19.6% of the population and 14.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 33.7% of those under the age of 18 and 12.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
