Covert, New York

Covert is a town located in Seneca County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,227.

The Town of Covert is located in the southeast corner of the county.

History

The town was set aside from the Town of Ovid in 1817. Afterwards Town of Lodi was taken in 1826. Ovid was also part of Tompkins County, New York during part of its history.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Schuyler County, New York, and the east town line is defined by Cayuga Lake.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 97.5 km² (37.6 mi²). 81.6 km² (31.5 mi²) of it is land and 15.9 km² (6.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 16.31% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,227 people, 892 households, and 620 families residing in the town. The population density is 27.3/km² (70.7/mi²). There are 1,183 housing units at an average density of 14.5/km² (37.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.25% White, 0.49% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 892 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% are married couples living together, 9.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 25.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.45 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 24.6% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 94.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,068, and the median income for a family is $45,759. Males have a median income of $31,328 versus $27,955 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,757. 10.1% of the population and 7.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Frontenac Point -- A projection into Cayuga Lake in the southeast part of the town.
  • Halls Corners -- A location south of Interlaken.
  • Holton Beach -- A lakeshore hamlet north of Bergen Beach.
  • Interlaken -- The Village of Interlaken in the north part of the town on Route 96.
  • Interlaken Beach -- A lakeshore hamlet near the north town line.
  • Osgood Landing -- A lakeshore hamlet in the southeast part of the town.
  • Six Corners -- A location west of Covert village.
