Coventry is a town located in Orleans County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,014. This final concert of the band Phish, held there in August, 2004, was the single largest gathering of people in the town's history. Starting on Saturday, August 14, fans had to be turned back due to bad weather. Even so, with 70,000 tickets sold, Coventry's augmented population was the largest in the state's history, outranking Burlington, Vermont, which only had around 39,000 people in the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 71.7 km² (27.7 mi²). 71.1 km² (27.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.80% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,014 people, 379 households, and 286 families residing in the town. The population density is 14.3/km² (36.9/mi²). There are 435 housing units at an average density of 6.1/km² (15.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.63% White, 0.30% African American, 0.99% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 379 households out of which 35.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.3% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% are non-families. 17.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 102.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $33,487, and the median income for a family is $37,500. Males have a median income of $26,528 versus $18,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,788. 17.2% of the population and 11.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.8% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
