Copiague, New York

Copiague is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 21,922.

Copiague is community in the Town of Babylon.

Geography

Copiague is located at 40°40'29" North, 73°23'36" West (40.674700, -73.393235)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²). 8.3 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.32% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 21,922 people, 7,210 households, and 5,342 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 2,653.3/km² (6,871.4/mi²). There are 7,415 housing units at an average density of 897.5/km² (2,324.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 82.00% White, 4.38% African American, 0.19% Native American, 1.74% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 8.48% from other races, and 3.13% from two or more races. 20.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,210 households out of which 32.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% are non-families. 19.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.03 and the average family size is 3.42.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $58,906, and the median income for a family is $65,369. Males have a median income of $40,563 versus $30,833 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $22,557. 8.0% of the population and 4.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.1% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

South of Merrick Road (or Montauk Highway), off of South Great Neck Road lies a highly affluent neigborhood Copiague Harbor, a private community. Works have been done to make this neigborhood as originally intended, a gated upper-scale community. Copiague Harbor, is also known as Great South Bay Estates and the "Harbor" to other Copiague residents. The median income for a household in Copiague Harbor is $150,000 and the median income for a family is $250,000.
