According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 8.7 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.7 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.30% is water.

History

The town is notable for being the birthplace of Richard Gatling, inventor of the machine gun. The church he attended, Buckhorn Baptist Church, is still active today.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 78 people, 35 households, and 22 families residing in the town. The population density is 9.0/km² (23.3/mi²). There are 44 housing units at an average density of 5.1/km² (13.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 83.33% White, 16.67% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 35 households out of which 20.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.78.

In the town the population is spread out with 17.9% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 20.5% from 25 to 44, 38.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 95.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $31,250, and the median income for a family is $45,417. Males have a median income of $26,250 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,769. 3.5% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line.
