Columbia County is a county located in the state of Washington. As of 2000, the population is 4,064. The county seat is at Dayton. It is named after the Columbia River.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,262 km² (874 mi²). 2,250 km² (869 mi²) of it is land and 12 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.54% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,064 people, 1,687 households, and 1,138 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (5/mi²). There are 2,018 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.73% White, 0.22% Black or African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.73% from other races, and 1.89% from two or more races. 6.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,687 households out of which 27.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.00% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.50% are non-families. 29.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 22.80% from 25 to 44, 27.70% from 45 to 64, and 18.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 95.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,500, and the median income for a family is $44,038. Males have a median income of $33,690 versus $21,367 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,374. 12.60% of the population and 8.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.90% of those under the age of 18 and 11.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
