Columbia City is a city located in Whitley County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,077. The city is the county seat of Whitley CountyTemplate:GR.

Geography

Columbia City is located at 41°9'31" North, 85°29'16" West (41.158569, -85.487784)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.5 km² (5.2 mi²). 13.5 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,077 people, 3,018 households, and 1,874 families residing in the city. The population density is 524.5/km² (1,359.5/mi²). There are 3,191 housing units at an average density of 236.5/km² (613.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.11% White, 0.32% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 1.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,018 households out of which 30.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.8% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.9% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.4% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $36,112, and the median income for a family is $47,357. Males have a median income of $34,803 versus $21,740 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,296. 6.4% of the population and 4.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.8% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Notable Natives & Former Residents

  • Thomas R. Marshall (1854-1925), Governor of Indiana (1909-1913) and Vice President of the United States (1913-1921), practiced law in Columbia City before becoming governor.
  • Ralph F. Gates (1891-1957), Governor of Indiana (1945-1949), was born in Columbia City and lived there throughout his life.
