Colquitt is a city located in Miller County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,939. The city is the county seat of Miller CountyTemplate:GR. Colquitt is the mayhaw capital of the world.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.4 km² (8.3 mi²). 21.4 km² (8.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.12% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,939 people, 772 households, and 501 families residing in the city. The population density is 90.7/km² (235.0/mi²). There are 868 housing units at an average density of 40.6/km² (105.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 55.65% White, 43.63% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 772 households out of which 28.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.4% are married couples living together, 22.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 24.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 78.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 69.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,792, and the median income for a family is $31,413. Males have a median income of $23,487 versus $19,676 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,300. 26.0% of the population and 21.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 36.0% of those under the age of 18 and 25.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
