Coleman County, Texas

Coleman County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 9,235. Its county seat is Coleman6. Coleman is named for Robert M. Coleman, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and soldier at the Battle of The Alamo.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,319 km² (1,281 mi²). 3,264 km² (1,260 mi²) of it is land and 55 km² (21 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.66% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,235 people, 3,889 households, and 2,609 families residing in the county. The population density is 3/km² (7/mi²). There are 5,248 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.53% White, 2.19% Black or African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 6.53% from other races, and 1.91% from two or more races. 13.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,889 households out of which 27.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.80% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.90% are non-families. 30.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county, the population is spread out with 23.60% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 22.70% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 23.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 92.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $25,658, and the median income for a family is $31,168. Males have a median income of $25,993 versus $17,378 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,911. 19.90% of the population and 15.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.40% of those under the age of 18 and 14.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
