Coldwater Township is a township located in Branch County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 3,678.
The city of Coldwater is at the center of the township, though it is politically independent. However, the Coldwater urban area extends well into the surrounding township. There are no other incorporated municipalities within the township.
Interstate 69 and U.S. Highway 12 intersect just east of the city. Michigan State Highway 86 has its eastern terminus at a junction with US 12 about two miles west of the city.
Geography
Coldwater River flows north through the township, forming a series of lakes just west and north of the city.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 73.9 km² (28.5 mi²). 70.9 km² (27.4 mi²) of it is land and 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.00% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,678 people, 1,426 households, and 1,048 families residing in the township. The population density is 51.8/km² (134.3/mi²). There are 1,684 housing units at an average density of 23.7/km² (61.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.09% White, 0.52% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.63% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,426 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% are non-families. 22.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.91.
In the township the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 27.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.8 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $44,360, and the median income for a family is $49,495. Males have a median income of $34,722 versus $24,938 for females. The per capita income for the township is $21,247. 3.4% of the population and 2.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.1% of those under the age of 18 and 1.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
