Cobleskill (town), New York

Cobleskill is a town located in Schoharie County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,407.

The Town of Cobleskill contains a village, also named Cobleskill, as well as the State University of New York at Cobleskill. The town is in the northern part of the county.

Geography

Interstate 88 passes across the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 79.7 km² (30.8 mi²). 79.3 km² (30.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.49% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,407 people, 2,270 households, and 1,287 families residing in the town. The population density is 80.8/km² (209.3/mi²). There are 2,509 housing units at an average density of 31.6/km² (81.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.76% White, 2.22% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 1.01% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 2.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,270 households out of which 26.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.3% are non-families. 35.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.90.

In the town the population is spread out with 18.4% under the age of 18, 24.9% from 18 to 24, 20.6% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,764, and the median income for a family is $46,875. Males have a median income of $32,708 versus $24,864 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,246. 15.3% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.1% of those under the age of 18 and 7.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
