Clinton is a town in Clinton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 727.

The Town of Clinton is located in the northwest corner of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 173.9 km² (67.1 mi²). 173.8 km² (67.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.

The northern town line is the border of Quebec in Canada, and the western town line is the border of the Town of Chateaugay in Franklin County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 727 people, 270 households, and 201 families residing in the town. The population density is 4.2/km² (10.8/mi²). There are 348 housing units at an average density of 2.0/km² (5.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.35% White, 0.28% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 0.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 270 households out of which 31.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.4% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% are non-families. 19.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 113.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 114.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $28,750, and the median income for a family is $34,375. Males have a median income of $25,804 versus $27,292 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,787. 17.9% of the population and 14.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.2% of those under the age of 18 and 20.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
