Clarksville, New York

Clarksville is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,146. The town is named after S.N. Clark, an agent of the Holland Land Company.

The Town of Clarksville is in the southwest part of the county.

History

The Town of Clarksville was incorporated in 1835, taking away part of the Town of Cuba. The first settlers arrived around 1822.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.9 km² (36.3 mi²). 93.9 km² (36.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.03% is water.

The west town line is the border of Cattaraugus County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,146 people, 447 households, and 324 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.2/km² (31.6/mi²). There are 766 housing units at an average density of 8.2/km² (21.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.34% White, 0.17% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 0.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 447 households out of which 32.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 100.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $29,931, and the median income for a family is $35,000. Males have a median income of $29,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,931. 14.4% of the population and 11.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.7% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
