Clarendon, New York

Clarendon is a town located in Orleans County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,392. The name is derived from Clarendon, Vermont.

History of Clarendon

The Town of Clarendon was incorporated in 1820 and is in the southeast part of the county. It was originally known as Farwell's Mills, derived from one of the first settlers, who arrived in 1810. Clarendon was once noted for its quarries and cement plants.

Museum exhibitor and artist, Carl Akeley was born in Clarendon in 1864.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 91.2 km² (35.2 mi²). 91.2 km² (35.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,392 people, 1,230 households, and 928 families residing in the town. The population density is 37.2/km² (96.3/mi²). There are 1,331 housing units at an average density of 14.6/km² (37.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.46% White, 0.94% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 1.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,230 households out of which 36.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.3% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% are non-families. 18.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.5% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 100.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $46,667, and the median income for a family is $52,064. Males have a median income of $34,432 versus $22,545 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,553. 8.1% of the population and 2.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.8% of those under the age of 18 and 1.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Clarendon

  • Clarendon -- This hamlet, the original Farwell settlement, centered around the intersection of Routes 31A and 237.
  • Manning -- A community, also previously known as West Clarendon or Mudville, is located on Route 32A west of Clarendon.
