Clare, New York

Clare is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 112.

The Town of Clare is in the south-central part of the county.

History

The Town of Clare, formed in 1880 from the Town of Peirrepont, was the last town formed in the county.

Geography

The town is in the Adirondack State Park, and two branches of the Grass River flow through the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 251.9 km² (97.3 mi²). 250.2 km² (96.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.67% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 112 people, 46 households, and 32 families residing in the town. The population density is 0.4/km² (1.2/mi²). There are 106 housing units at an average density of 0.4/km² (1.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.54% White, 0.00% African American, 1.79% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.89% from other races, and 1.79% from two or more races. 0.89% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 46 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.2% are married couples living together, 4.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% are non-families. 26.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 111.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,667, and the median income for a family is $36,250. Males have a median income of $25,625 versus $50,833 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,453. 12.8% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.5% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
