Chip Taylor is the professional name of American songwriter John Wesley Voight (born in 1940).
After a failed start at a career as a golf pro, he became a musical performer. However, his success came from songwriting, in which he worked both alone and with other songwriters such as Al Gorgoni, Billy Vera, Ted Daryll, and Jerry Ragavoy. His best known songs are "Wild Thing" (originally written for The Troggs) and "Angel of the Morning." His other songs include the pop hits "I Can't Let Go," "Make Me Belong to You," "I Can Make It With You." "Step Out of Your Mind," "Country Girl City Man," "I'll Hold Out My Hand," and "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)", and the country hits "Sweet Dream Woman," and "Son of a Rotten Gambler."
In the 1970s Taylor gave up the music business to become a professional gambler. He began performing and recording again in 1993.
He is the younger brother of actor Jon Voight. His niece is Angelina Jolie.
