Cheney is a city located in Spokane County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,832. Eastern Washington University is located in Cheney.

History

Cheney was officially incorporated on November 28, 1883.

Geography

Cheney is located at 47°29'19" North, 117°34'43" West (47.488634, -117.578581)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.73% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,832 people, 3,108 households, and 1,529 families residing in the city. The population density is 833.8/km² (2,161.0/mi²). There are 3,293 housing units at an average density of 310.9/km² (805.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.28% White, 2.11% African American, 1.32% Native American, 6.34% Asian, 0.35% Pacific Islander, 1.71% from other races, and 2.89% from two or more races. 4.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,108 households out of which 25.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.6% are married couples living together, 11.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 50.8% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the city the population is spread out with 18.2% under the age of 18, 41.0% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 12.9% from 45 to 64, and 6.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $22,593, and the median income for a family is $37,935. Males have a median income of $27,745 versus $23,375 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,566. 30.9% of the population and 20.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
