Chelsea, Michigan

Chelsea is a city located in Washtenaw County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,398.

In March 2004, by a 995-226 vote, residents decided to change municipal status from a village into a home-rule city. As a result, residents will no longer pay propery taxes to adjacent Lima Township and Sylvan Township and the city will provide all services formerly provided by both village and township governments. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.7 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.47% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,398 people, 1,840 households, and 1,133 families residing in the city. The population density is 508.4/km² (1,315.3/mi²). There are 1,913 housing units at an average density of 221.1/km² (572.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.14% White, 0.70% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 0.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,840 households out of which 29.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.4% are non-families. 35.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 24.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 82.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $51,132, and the median income for a family is $72,266. Males have a median income of $50,506 versus $35,579 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,608. 4.3% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.9% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
