Chappaqua is a hamlet and census-designated place located in Westchester County, New York. As of the 2000 census, it had a total population of 9,468.

Chappaqua is located in the Town of New Castle. It is the current home of former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Geography

Chappaqua is located at 41°9'57" North, 73°45'55" West (41.165925, -73.765244)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 24.4 km² (9.4 mi²). 24.3 km² (9.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.64% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9,468 people, 3,118 households, and 2,687 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 389.7/km² (1,009.8/mi²). There are 3,181 housing units at an average density of 130.9/km² (339.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 91.80% White, 0.94% African American, 0.03% Native American, 5.62% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 2.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,118 households out of which 52.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 79.1% are married couples living together, 5.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 13.8% are non-families. 11.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.03 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 32.8% under the age of 18, 3.2% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $163,201, and the median income for a family is $180,451. Males have a median income of $100,000 versus $71,875 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $77,835. 3.1% of the population and 2.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Chappaqua resides in the New Castle School district. Schools include: Elementary - Roaring Brook, Westorchard, Grafflin; Middle school - Seven Bridges, Robert E. Bell; High School - Horace Greeley. Over 94% of graduates attend 4-year colleges.

Famous residents: Vanessa Williams, former U.S. president Bill Clinton.


Chappaqua is also the title of a trippy 1966 cult film about drug addiction. Although little of the film takes place in the hamlet, the innocence of a suburban childhood and Native American history — 'Chappaqua' is derived the Algonquin word for 'running water' — are themes explored in the movie.
