Champlain (town), New York

Champlain is a town located in Clinton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,791. The town is named after Lake Champlain.

The Town of Champlain is in the northeast part of the county. Within the town is a village also named Champlain.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 152.4 km² (58.8 mi²). 132.6 km² (51.2 mi²) of it is land and 19.7 km² (7.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 12.95% water.

Lake Champlain in on the east edge of the town, where the town has a common border with Grand Isle County, Vermont.

The Northway (Interstate Highway 87) passes through the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,791 people, 2,386 households, and 1,562 families residing in the town. The population density is 43.7/km² (113.1/mi²). There are 2,718 housing units at an average density of 20.5/km² (53.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.74% White, 0.52% Black or African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,386 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 28.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,775, and the median income for a family is $46,113. Males have a median income of $35,198 versus $26,345 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,987. 9.2% of the population and 6.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.5% of those under the age of 18 and 6.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
