Cazenovia (town), New York

Cazenovia is a town located in Madison County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,481. The town is named after Theophilus Cazenove, an agent of the Holland Land Company.

The Town of Cazenovia has a village also named Cazenovia. The town is on the west border of the county.

History

The Town of Cazenovia was established in 1793, before the creation of the county.

Geography

The west town line is the border of Onondaga County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 134.0 km² (51.7 mi²). 129.2 km² (49.9 mi²) of it is land and 4.7 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.54% water. The Town contains Cazenovia Lake.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,481 people, 2,353 households, and 1,658 families residing in the town. The population density is 50.2/km² (129.9/mi²). There are 2,567 housing units at an average density of 19.9/km² (51.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.25% White, 1.10% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 1.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,353 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% are non-families. 24.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the town the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 12.8% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $57,232, and the median income for a family is $73,590. Males have a median income of $50,556 versus $31,613 for females. The per capita income for the town is $28,957. 4.3% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.9% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • North Cazenovia -- A hamlet by the north town line east of the lake.
  • Perkins Corner -- A location on Route 13 by the west town line.
  • Rippleton -- A hamlet south of Cazenovia village on Route 13.
  • Union -- A location near the west town line and north of West Woodstock.
  • West Woodstock -- A hamlet in the southwest part of the town
