Castle Rock, Colorado

Castle Rock, Colorado, is the county seat of Douglas County, Colorado, about 35 miles south of Denver, Colorado on the Interstate 25 corridor just east of the front range of the Rocky Mountains. The town is the center of the burgeoning urbanization of the county. Castle Rock is named after a small prominent mesa just north of the town, clearly visible from Interstate 25. Access is provided to climb to the top of the rock should one so desire. Castle Rock is on Plum Creek, a small stream which floods from time to time. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 20,224.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 81.9 km² (31.6 mi²). 81.9 km² (31.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 20,224 people, 7,226 households, and 5,542 families residing in the town. The population density is 247.0/km² (639.9/mi²). There are 7,447 housing units at an average density of 91.0/km² (235.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 93.85% White, 0.47% Black or African American, 0.62% Native American, 1.10% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 1.86% from other races, and 2.04% from two or more races. 6.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,226 households out of which 45.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.3% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% are non-families. 17.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the town the population is spread out with 31.6% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 38.2% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 4.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 101.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $64,138, and the median income for a family is $72,563. Males have a median income of $47,626 versus $32,328 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,760. 3.6% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
