Casa Grande is a city located in Pinal County, Arizona. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 25,224. It is named after the ruins at the nearby Casa Grande Ruins National Monument.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 124.8 km² (48.2 mi²). 124.8 km² (48.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 25,224 people, 8,920 households, and 6,547 families residing in the city. The population density is 202.2/km² (523.7/mi²). There are 11,041 housing units at an average density of 88.5/km² (229.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 64.90% White, 4.27% Black or African American, 4.91% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 21.09% from other races, and 3.56% from two or more races. 39.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,920 households out of which 37.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% are married couples living together, 15.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% are non-families. 21.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.9% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $36,212, and the median income for a family is $40,827. Males have a median income of $34,858 versus $23,533 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,917. 16.0% of the population and 12.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.2% of those under the age of 18 and 12.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Casa Grande, Arizona is a dynamic, involved community, a modern city with rural heritage and old-fashioned values. Its economic base is a mix of retail trade, factory outlet shopping, manufacturing and agriculture. Founded in 1879, Casa Grande was named for the famous Hohokam Indian Ruins 20 miles to the northeast. Midway between Phoenix and Tucson, the city has grown to be the largest community in western Pinal County since its incorporation in 1915.

Principal Economic Activities

Casa Grande is strategically located at the intersection of two interstate highways (I-8 and I-10) in an area known as Arizona's Golden Corridor. Once dependent on agriculture and mining, the community has evolved into a diversified full-service area with manufacturing, retail trade, government and tourist-related employment. All of Pinal County is a designated Enterprise Zone.

Scenic Attractions

Casa Grande's location, mild climate, and scenic attractions make it attractive to tourists and winter visiotrs. The Casa Grande Valley Historical Museum offers many historical displays and facts about the area. The unique architecture of the historical railroad station and other historic buildings can be enjoyed on a walking tour of Casa Grande. Named a Main Street city in 1992, Casa Grande is revitalizing the unique downtown area. The Casa Grande Art Museum hosts a number of shows each year featuring sculpture, water-color, multimedia and Western art by Arizona artists. The Casa Grande Valley Players will begin a new season of community theater. The city is also the home of the Arizona State Open Chili championship held every March. The annual O'Odham Tash Celebration, a gathering of tribes, is held in mid-February and features Native American arts and crafts, ceremonial dances, rodeos, powwows and parades.

Community Facilities

Casa Grande offers a broad range of community facilities including two senior centers, two museums, a library, a bowling center, a fitness and racquet club, one pool, one movie triplex, four golf courses, an archery range, and rodeo facilties. There are more than 18 parks, many with ramadas, handball courts, tennis courts, softball diamonds, and playgound equipment.

Governmental Lodging and Meeting Facilities

The city is governed by a mayor, six council members and a city manager. Police protection is provided by the city and the Pinal County Sheriff's Department. There are two fire stations with both full-time and part-time emergency medical personnel. There are over 650 rooms available in seven hotels/motels which also feature numerous meeting facilities, with the largest seating 500 persons. Casa Grande also offers 15 RV parks in the area.

Medical Financial

Casa Grande Regional Medical Center with 110 beds and the Desert Valley Care Center with 128 beds provide long-term care. Medical professions in Casa Grande include: 41 physicians (11 consulting physicians), four orthodonists, 12 chiropractors, four obstetricians, nine optometrists, and 17 dentists. Also, 32 additional physicians (specialists) are available through the Associated and Allied Health Professions. Casa Grande has six banks and two credit unions with 11 branch locations. Further, Casa Grande businesses are eligible for assistance in financing fixed assets through the Strategic Finance Division of the Arizona Department of Commerce. Industrial Properties Educational

There are eight fully improved parks, most with access to rail, all with excellent access to I-10 and I-8. Parcels, ranging fone to 360 acres, are available. Casa Grande has nine public elementary schools, two private elementary schools, and a new public high school facility at 2730 N. Trekell Rd., with a 2,800-student capacity. Central Arizona College, a two-year community college east of Casa Grande, offers a range of courses including college preparatory, liberal arts, vocational/technical, and career education. Arizona State University in Tempe (45 miles north) and the University of Arizona in Tucson (67 miles south) are major four-year state institutions. Northern Arizona University offers courses leading to a four-year degree or a masters of education degree in elementary education; for information, call (520) 786-7020.
