Carlton, New York

Carlton is a town located in Orleans County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,960. The name is derived from a shipbuilding district in Ontario, Canada.

The Town of Carlton was formed from the Towns of Gaines and Ridgeway in 1822 and was then known as the Town of Oak Orchard. It was incorporated as Carleton as 1825 and lies in the north part of the county on the shore of Lake Ontario.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 115.4 km² (44.5 mi²). 113.2 km² (43.7 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.86% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,960 people, 1,103 households, and 793 families residing in the town. The population density is 26.1/km² (67.7/mi²). There are 1,619 housing units at an average density of 14.3/km² (37.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.32% White, 3.24% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.91% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,103 households out of which 34.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% are married couples living together, 8.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.1% are non-families. 21.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.11.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 110.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $40,660, and the median income for a family is $42,028. Males have a median income of $32,188 versus $23,448 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,439. 10.3% of the population and 7.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.5% of those under the age of 18 and 4.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Point Breeze -- a community on Lake Ontario, adjacent to the Oak Orchard River and the Oak Orchard State Marine Park.
  • Sawyer -- also known as Curtis Corners.
  • Sunset Beach -- a community on the shore of Lake Ontario.
  • Waterport -- A hamlet on Route 279, where Otter Creek joins the Oak Orchard River, which reaches its maximum width.
  • Waterport Station -- A location on the north side of the Oak Orchard River, north of Waterport on Route 279.
