Carle Place is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Nassau County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,247.

Geography

Carle Place is located at 40°45'2" North, 73°36'38" West (40.750600, -73.610472)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,247 people, 1,900 households, and 1,371 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 2,155.2/km² (5,572.9/mi²). There are 1,922 housing units at an average density of 789.5/km² (2,041.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 89.88% White, 1.89% African American, 0.02% Native American, 5.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.47% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 7.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,900 households out of which 31.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.8% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.31.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $70,938, and the median income for a family is $85,240. Males have a median income of $51,745 versus $37,344 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $31,624. 5.4% of the population and 3.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.1% of those under the age of 18 and 10.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The hamlet draws its name from the Carle House - a 32 room house built by Silas Carle in Westbury in the 1800s. It was called the "Carle Place," and the surrounding area later took the name.

The region was previously known as "Frog Hollow" because of the large number of them in the area. (Frog Hollow survives as a community nickname as well as in the name of the Carle Place school scholarship fundraiser, the Frog Hollow Frolics.) Carle Place High School's sports teams are also named the Frogs.


Famous People from Carle Place

Legendary Guitarist Steve Vai and Joe Satriani are from Carle Place, as well as Steve's nephew Roger Vai.
