Canfield, Ohio

Canfield is a city located in Mahoning County, Ohio, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 224 and U.S. Highway 62 about ten miles southwest of Youngstown. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,374.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²). 12.0 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,374 people, 2,917 households, and 2,143 families residing in the city. The population density is 613.6/km² (1,588.1/mi²). There are 3,043 housing units at an average density of 253.2/km² (655.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.27% White, 1.29% Asian, 0.45% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.58% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,917 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.0% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% are non-families. 24.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $59,434, and the median income for a family is $71,484. Males have a median income of $55,346 versus $30,493 for females. The per capita income for the city is $31,756. 3.2% of the population and 2.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.2% of those under the age of 18 and 4.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Culture

Canfield is a well educated, upper middle class community. Canfield has strict zoning regulations prohibiting government housing, large tacky signage, overgrown lawns, and above-ground pools. The lovely tree-lined "Green" sits at the heart of the quaint New England-style village. Here many community activites take place inculding First Night Canfield, a non-alcoholic family-oriented celebration that occurs every New Year's Eve.

The Canfield Local School System is the envy of the Mahoning Valley with its rating of "Excellent" by the Ohio Department of Education.

Canfield is continues to grow: new luxurious housing developments are popping up throughout Canfield, replacing the family farms the village was once known for.

Every year in late August the Mahoning County-Canfield Fair ("Ohio's Largest County Fair") takes place in Canfield. The fair attracts people from across the United States. Numerous famous entertainers have performed at the Canfield Fair, including Bob Hope, Dolly Parton, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, and Bill Cosby.
