Caneadea, New York

Caneadea is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,694.

The Town of Caneadea is in the northwest part of the county.

Houghton College, a private, Christian college, is located by the community of Houghton.

History

The region was first settled around 1800. The Town of Caneadea was incorporated in 1808 from part of the Town of Angelica. However, the town was reduced to form later towns of the county. The Caneadea Reservation of the Seneca tribe was once located in the town, but they sold off their claims in 1825.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.1 km² (36.3 mi²). 92.0 km² (35.5 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.23% water.

The Genesee River, an important and historic Western New York river, flows through the town. Rushford Lake is partly at the town's west line.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,694 people, 650 households, and 436 families residing in the town. The population density is 29.3/km² (75.8/mi²). There are 1,098 housing units at an average density of 11.9/km² (30.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.33% White, 1.00% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.97% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 2.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 650 households out of which 33.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% are married couples living together, 7.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.9% are non-families. 25.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.20.

In the town the population is spread out with 18.4% under the age of 18, 40.9% from 18 to 24, 16.1% from 25 to 44, 13.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 80.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $31,065, and the median income for a family is $39,667. Males have a median income of $29,643 versus $21,563 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,010. 21.3% of the population and 12.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.8% of those under the age of 18 and 1.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Caneadea

  • Caneadea -- The hamlet of Caneadea is located on Route 19 by the Genesee River in the western part of the town.
  • Genesee River -- A river that flows northward through the town.
  • Houghton -- The hamlet of Houghton is the location of Houghton College. The village is on Route 19 near the northern town line, adjacent to the Genesee River.
  • Oramel -- A hamlet on Route 19, south of the hamlet of Canadea and near the Genesee River in south part of the town. Oramel was incorporated as a village in 1856, but later abandoned this status.
