Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania

Cambridge Springs is a borough located in Crawford County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 2,363.

In 1904 Cambridge Springs was the site of a famous chess tournament won by Frank Marshall ahead of World Champion Emanuel Lasker and fourteen other players. A variation of the Queen's Gambit opening played several times there is today known as the Cambridge Springs Variation (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Nbd7 5.e3 c6 6.Nf3 Qa5 in algebraic notation).

Geography

Cambridge Springs is located at 41°48'8" North, 80°3'33" West (41.802324, -80.059174)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,363 people, 701 households, and 433 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,048.7/km² (2,724.3/mi²). There are 761 housing units at an average density of 337.7/km² (877.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 86.58% White, 12.23% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. 2.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 701 households out of which 30.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% are non-families. 33.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the borough the population is spread out with 19.0% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 40.9% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 54.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 46.4 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $31,957, and the median income for a family is $39,196. Males have a median income of $31,146 versus $22,350 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $12,863. 12.2% of the population and 8.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.1% of those under the age of 18 and 12.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
