Cambria is a village located in Williamson County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,330.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,330 people, 564 households, and 367 families residing in the village. The population density is 374.8/km² (974.3/mi²). There are 649 housing units at an average density of 182.9/km² (475.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.04% White, 2.26% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 1.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 564 households out of which 35.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.9% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% are non-families. 28.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.91.

In the village the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 13.4% from 18 to 24, 32.0% from 25 to 44, 17.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $25,870, and the median income for a family is $34,688. Males have a median income of $27,262 versus $20,750 for females. The per capita income for the village is $12,913. 23.2% of the population and 18.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.4% of those under the age of 18 and 25.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

73.7% of the total village population has their high school diploma or equivalent. This is below the national average of 80.4%. The percentage of the totla population that holds a bachelor's degree or above is also below the national average of 24.4%. Only 12.9% of citizens hold college level degrees.

Political Facts

As of the 2005 election, 959 Cambria citizens were registered to vote. That is approximately 72.1% of the total population

The Mayor of Cambria is William "Bill" Herron (I), a retired butcher. The mayor serves a four year term, and Herron is in his third consecutive term.

Village trustees are Criminal Justice instructor Charles "Rick" Ellett (I), retired civil servant William "Bill" McKenzie (I), Fish and Wildlife Service employee Robert "Bruce" Whitecotton (I), Williamson County Sheriff's Department Captain Les Higgins (I), dental hygenist Jennifer Sherry (I), and anestesiologist Chistine Dakin (I). Village trustees serve four year terms.

Village Board meeting are held every first and third Monday of the month at the Cambria Village Hall located in the old Cambria Grade School.

Police and Crime

Currently, the Cambria Police Chief is Rick Upton.

Cambria is regarded by residents and those in the area as a "speed trap." The Cambria Police Department is very strict in their regulation of the speed limit.

Business and Industry

The village of Cambria, located in the northwestern Williamson County--one of the fastest growing regions in the the state, contains few businesses. Currently, Cambria has one service station/convenience store, an automotive dealership, and a few auto repair shops.

Cambria is a dry community--it is illegal to sell alcoholic beverages within village limits.

Education

Cambria is located in the Carterville School Distict Unit 5. The Cambria Grade School closed in 1998 when the the Tri-C communities of Carterville, Cambria, and Crainville consolidated all Kindergarten through middle school grade levels.

Cambria is located near John A. Logan College located in Carterville and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

Faith and Religion

Cambria is home to three major churches. The majority of Cambrians profess the Protestant faith although there is a small and notable Wiccan enclave within the community.

Cambria is located at 37°46'59" North, 89°7'7" West (37.783054, -89.118533)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²). 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.72% is water.
