Cal State LA campus

California State University, Los Angeles (often shortened to CSULA or Cal State L.A.) is a state-run public university located in Los Angeles, California near the city of Alhambra. It is part of the California State University system.

Serving approximately 21,000 students primarily from the greater Los Angeles area, Cal State L.A. is organized into six colleges that incorporate 50 academic departments and divisions offering a variety of majors. The green, hilltop campus is home to the nation's first Charter College of Education, the NASA-funded SPACE program and other award-winning engineering programs, along with a National Science Foundation-funded environmental research center. Cal State L.A.'s renowned programs include the U.S. News' top-ranked undergraduate business program at a Los Angeles public university, a teacher credential program that has awarded the greatest number of credentials in California, the nation's largest early/pre-teen collegiate program, and the only graduate Criminalistics program west of the Mississippi. Cal State L.A. is the highest ranked California institution conferring bachelor's degrees on Hispanics.

The vast majority of Cal State L.A. students are local commuters, and many are among the first in their families to attend college. Large numbers come from the surrounding working-class neighborhoods of El Sereno, East Los Angeles, and City Terrace, as well as middle-class University Hills, Alhambra, and Monterey Park.

History

In 1947, Los Angeles State College was founded by an act of California legislature and opened for classes on the campus of the former Los Angeles City College. P. Victor Peterson, president of LACC, became acting president of the school. In 1964, it was renamed California State College at Los Angeles (CSCLA) and became part of the California State College (CSC) system. In 1972, the CSC system became The California State University and Colleges (CSUC). CSCLA received University status, and was renamed to California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA).

The Solar Eagle

The College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology has achieved great success in designing ultra-high gas mileage cars. The ECST Super Eagle won the American Society of Automotive Engineers' 2004 mileage competition with a tested fuel consumption of 1,615 miles per gallon. The faculty team advisor, James Ettaro, was also honored by the SAE. The Super Eagle is the latest in a long line of solar-powered cars and other super-efficient vehicle technologies.

Early Entrance Program

The Early Entrance Program (EEP) is designed to allow students between the ages of 11 and 16 to enter college at a significantly early age. Each year, roughly 25 students are chosen for this opportunity. Criteria include grades, test performance, a maturity evaluation, and successful completion of two Cal State L.A. courses. Once admitted, 'EEPsters' take both regular and honors classes, and follow a normal course of college-level study. Altogether, the program's participants number about 100.
