Caledonia (town), New York

Caledonia is a town located in Livingston County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,567.

The Town of Caledonia contains a village called Caledonia. The town is in the northwest part of the county.

History

The first settlements occurred in 1797. The Town of Caledonia was established in 1803 as the Town of Southampton. It assumed it current name in 1806.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Monroe County, New York, and the west town line is the border of Genesee County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 114.7 km² (44.3 mi²). 114.3 km² (44.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,567 people, 1,671 households, and 1,268 families residing in the town. The population density is 40.0/km² (103.5/mi²). There are 1,750 housing units at an average density of 15.3/km² (39.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.11% White, 3.50% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 1.25% from two or more races. 0.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,671 households out of which 39.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% are married couples living together, 9.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% are non-families. 19.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.73 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 100.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $46,359, and the median income for a family is $50,607. Males have a median income of $37,287 versus $28,159 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,611. 5.0% of the population and 3.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.0% of those under the age of 18 and 0.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Menzie Crossing -- A hamlet northeast of Caledonia village near the north town line.
  • Taylor -- A hamlet south of Caledonia village on Route 36.
  • Toggletown -- A hamlet on the south town line, on Route 20.
