Byron, New York

Byron is a town and township located in Genesee County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,493. It was named in honor of Lord Byron.

The Town of Byron was incorporated in 1820 from part of the Town of Bergen and is on the northern border of Genesee County. Byron is traditionally a rural area of dairy and vegetable farms, but is increasingly becoming a bedroom community for Rochester and Batavia.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 83.5 km² (32.2 mi²). 83.4 km² (32.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.19% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,493 people, 878 households, and 663 families residing in the town. The population density is 29.9/km² (77.4/mi²). There are 922 housing units at an average density of 11.1/km² (28.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.75% White, 0.28% African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.89% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 3.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 878 households out of which 40.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.2% are married couples living together, 7.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 18.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $49,722, and the median income for a family is $56,927. Males have a median income of $38,828 versus $24,877 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,825. 5.0% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Communities and locations in Byron

  • Byron -- (previously Byron Center) The hamlet of Byron, located on Route 237.
  • Lidke's Hill -- A location in the northern part of the town.
  • Mosquito Point -- A location in the northwest part of the town.
  • Pumpkin Hill -- A hamlet north of Byron on Route 237. It is also called North Byron. The name Pumpkin Hill comes from a former hotel by that name at this location.
  • South Byron -- (originally Brusselville) A community south of Byron on Route 237.
