Butler, New York

Butler is a town located in Wayne County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,277.

The Town of Butler was formed from the Town of Wolcott in 1826. The town is on the east border of the county.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 96.2 km² (37.2 mi²). 96.1 km² (37.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.

The east town line is the border of Cayuga County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,277 people, 743 households, and 540 families residing in the town. The population density is 23.7/km² (61.4/mi²). There are 782 housing units at an average density of 8.1/km² (21.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 89.46% White, 7.55% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.71% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 4.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 743 households out of which 34.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% are non-families. 21.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the town the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 33.6% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 128.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 133.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $38,462, and the median income for a family is $41,587. Males have a median income of $32,617 versus $21,723 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,285. 9.8% of the population and 6.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 10.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Butler Center -- A hamlet near the town center.
  • South Butler (formerly Harringtons Corner) -- A hamlet near the south town line on Route 89. The village is the site in 1853 of the first ordination of a woman minister in the United States, Antoinette Brown.
  • West Butler -- A hamlet near the west town line on Route 259.
  • Westbury -- A hamlet on the town line in the northeast corner of the town.
