Burns, New York

Burns is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,248. The town is named after Scots poet Robert Burns.

The Town of Burns lies in the northeast corner of Allegany County.

History

The town was formed in 1826 from part of the Town of Ossian in Livingston County. The region had been first settled around 1805.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Livingston County, New York, and the east town line is the border of Steuben County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 70.4 km² (27.2 mi²). 70.4 km² (27.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.04% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,248 people, 456 households, and 340 families residing in the town. The population density is 17.7/km² (45.9/mi²). There are 541 housing units at an average density of 7.7/km² (19.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.84% White, 0.00% African American, 0.72% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 456 households out of which 36.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.9% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% are non-families. 19.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $33,152, and the median income for a family is $37,054. Males have a median income of $32,120 versus $21,181 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,613. 12.3% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.7% of those under the age of 18 and 2.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Canaseraga -- The Village of Canaseraga is near the north town line.
  • Canaseraga Creek -- A stream in the northern part of the town and tributary of the Genesee River.
  • Garwood -- A hamlet in the northwest corner of the town on Route 70.
  • Gas Spring -- A location in the southwest corner of the town.
  • Masten Corners -- A location near the western town line.
