Burkesville, Kentucky

Burkesville is a city located in Cumberland County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,756. It is the county seat of Cumberland CountyTemplate:GR, one of the westernmost Appalachian counties in Kentucky.

Burkesville is located at 36°47'34" North, 85°22'10" West (36.792787, -85.369578)Template:GR. Highways 90 and 61 intersect at the town's single stoplight. The Cumberland River also runs through the city. Once a source of commerce, the river is now used for recreational purposes. A single rail line once ran through the city, but has long since been removed.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.4 km² (2.8 mi²). 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,756 people, 768 households, and 459 families residing in the city. The population density is 239.6/km² (620.2/mi²). There are 856 housing units at an average density of 116.8/km² (302.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.90% White, 10.88% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 768 households out of which 27.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.5% are married couples living together, 19.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.2% are non-families. 37.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the city the population is spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 23.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 76.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 69.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $17,209, and the median income for a family is $24,028. Males have a median income of $20,985 versus $16,763 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,653. 29.9% of the population and 23.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 38.0% of those under the age of 18 and 30.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
