Brushton, New York

Brushton is a village located in Franklin County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 479.

History

The village took its name from Brushs' Mills, which were located on the Little Salmon River. The mills were purchased by Mr. Henry Brush in 1835 and the hamlet was officially named Brushton on October 1, 1877.

Geography

Brushton is located at 44°49'51" North, 74°30'52" West (44.830736, -74.514341)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 479 people, 213 households, and 119 families residing in the village. The population density is 660.5/km² (1,727.2/mi²). There are 250 housing units at an average density of 344.7/km² (901.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 98.33% White, 0.42% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 1.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 213 households out of which 26.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.3% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.7% are non-families. 36.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the village the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 23.8% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $18,750, and the median income for a family is $29,722. Males have a median income of $29,219 versus $17,292 for females. The per capita income for the village is $13,674. 19.4% of the population and 13.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.4% of those under the age of 18 and 15.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
