Brooke County is a county located in the state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 25,447. Its county seat is Wellsburg6. Brooke County is named for Robert Brooke, Virginia Governor, 1794-96.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 239 km² (92 mi²). 230 km² (89 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.70% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 25,447 people, 10,396 households, and 7,152 families residing in the county. The population density is 111/km² (286/mi²). There are 11,150 housing units at an average density of 48/km² (126/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.90% White, 0.85% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,396 households out of which 26.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.30% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the county, the population is spread out with 20.40% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 18.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 91.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,981, and the median income for a family is $39,948. Males have a median income of $34,397 versus $19,711 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,131. 11.70% of the population and 9.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.40% of those under the age of 18 and 9.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
