Bristol, New York

Bristol is a town located in Ontario County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,421. The town is named after Bristol County, Massachusetts.

The Town of Bristol is in the western half of the county. US Route 20 passes across the town.

History

The region may have been visited by the explorer Robert de LaSalle in the 17th Century. The Town of Bristol was formed in 1789. In 1838 part of the town was used to form the Town of South Bristol.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 95.2 km² (36.8 mi²). 95.2 km² (36.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,421 people, 895 households, and 690 families residing in the town. The population density is 25.4/km² (65.9/mi²). There are 989 housing units at an average density of 10.4/km² (26.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.14% White, 0.33% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 895 households out of which 39.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.7% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.8% are non-families. 17.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.71 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.4% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 106.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $53,250, and the median income for a family is $60,172. Males have a median income of $38,182 versus $27,900 for females. The per capita income for the town is $24,060. 5.5% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.5% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Bristol Center -- A hamlet in the eatern part of the town on Route 64.
  • Fletchers Corners -- A location between Gladding Corner and Bristol Center.
  • Gladding Corner -- A hamlet in the south part of the town.
  • Mayweed Corner -- A hamlet on Route 20 and south of Bristol village.
  • Vincent -- A hamlet northeast of Mayweed Corner on Route 20.
