Boylston is a town located in Oswego County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 505.

The Town of Boylston is located on the north boundary of the county. Boylston was created from part of the Town of Orwell in 1828.

Geography

The north town line with part of the west town line is the border of Jefferson County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 101.4 km² (39.2 mi²). 101.4 km² (39.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.03% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 505 people, 193 households, and 137 families residing in the town. The population density is 5.0/km² (12.9/mi²). There are 333 housing units at an average density of 3.3/km² (8.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.02% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.19% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 193 households out of which 31.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% are non-families. 22.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 110.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $39,375, and the median income for a family is $44,792. Males have a median income of $32,083 versus $25,625 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,360. 8.3% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.8% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • East Boylston -- A hamlet in the northeast part of the town on Route 17.
  • Hemlock District -- A location east of Boylston Center.
  • North Boylston -- A hamlet in the northwest corner of the town.
  • Plantz Corners -- A hamlet near the east town line on Routes 13 and 17.
  • Smartville -- A hamlet south of Boylston Center on Route 50.
  • Tamarack Swamp -- A bog in the southeast part of the town.
