Bordentown is a Walsh Act city located in Burlington County, New Jersey. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,969.

Bordentown was home to Napoleonic brother and former King of Naples and Spain Joseph Bonaparte for 17 years. The residents of Bordentown nicknamed him "The Good Mr. Bonaparte" (Good to distinguish him from his younger brother). In more modern times, Bordentown is home to the Albert C. Wagner Youth Correctional Facility. Bordentown station is also a stop on the River LINE light rail service.

Geography

Bordentown is located at 40°8'45" North, 74°42'37" West (40.145900, -74.710148)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.15% water.

Bordentown borders Bordentown Township and the Delaware River.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,969 people, 1,757 households, and 989 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,665.7/km² (4,303.6/mi²). There are 1,884 housing units at an average density of abc 790.7/km² (2,042.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 81.25% White, 13.08% African American, 0.05% Native American, 1.91% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.81% from other races, and 2.87% from two or more races. 2.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,757 households out of which 24.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.7% are non-families. 35.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 34.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $47,279, and the median income for a family is $59,872. Males have a median income of $39,909 versus $31,780 for females. The per capita income for the city is $25,882. 6.8% of the population and 4.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.8% of those under the age of 18 and 10.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
